Luther C. Cortelyou, 86, a resident of Muscotah for 48 years, died at his home Monday morning.
Mr. Cortelyou was born on December 23, 1851, at Harlingen, New Jersey. He was educated in the New Jersey schools and finished his schooling at Rutgers College. He was married to Miss Gertrude Stelle at New Brunswick, N. J. in 1876. They made their home in New Brunswick until 1889 when they came to Muscotah to make their home.
Four sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Cortelyou, three of whom survive. They are Luther Cortelyou, Jr., of Parsons; Peter J. Cortelyou, of Oakdale, Calif., and Frank M. Cortelyou, of Kansas City. The other son, Stelle Cortelyou, died in 1905 in Panama, where he contracted yellow fever while working on the Panama Canal. All four sons graduated at A.C.H.S.
Mrs. Cortelyou died in 1905. In 1907, he was married to Mrs. Alice Calvert.
Mr. Cortelyou was in the grain business at Muscotah and Corning for many years. He was President of the Grain Dealers Association and vice-president of the National Grain Dealers organization. In 1906, he sold his elevators. In later life he organized the Muscotah Farmers and Merchants State bank and served as president of the bank for a number of years.
He was a member of the Muscotah Congregational Church and an active Mason. Mr. Cortelyou was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word.
