BERN DENT
---Bern Dent, La Plata farmer and pioneer western settler, died in a Kirksville hospital at 11:00 Wednesday morning. Death was due to a heart ailment complicated by pneumonia.
---Services will be at 1:00 Friday at the Christian church conducted by Rev. R. L. Prather. Interment will be in La Plata cemetery.
---Mrs. Dent was born April 13, 1873 on a farm a few miles south of La Plata, the son of Marcus and Susan Adeline Dent who were among the earlyist La Plata settlers. He was one of twins and his twin brother Bennett Dent, preceded him in death early in the century. He was the last survivor of eight children--these were Margaret Ann, James William, Francis Edward, Sallie Elizabeth and John. His father, Marcus Dent, died in 1912 and his mother died in 1916.
---Mr. Dent was married to Alice Norfolk on February 6, 1896 and she survives, along with their one son, Lester Dent, author and novelist of La Plata.
---Since 1910 Mr. Dent had been a farmer and stock-man near La Plata, operating his farm, which had in turn been operated by his father before him, two miles northeast of La Plata. Earlier in life Mr. Dent was a pioneer settler in Wyoming by trail-driving a small herd of cattle in from Nebraska. The Wyoming area at this time was almost unsettled and much of it was hostile Indian country and the trip was made by covered wagon. Mr. Dent was also a pioneer in the so-called Indian territory, which had later became the state of Oklahoma, living for several years near Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
---With deepest respect we mourn the passing of these hardy men whose independent spirits made ours a great nation.
