A funeral for Lucille L. Mitchell of Willamina will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Willamina Elementary School, with the Rev. Dennis Morley officiating. Interment will be in Banks Cemetery, Banks.

The chapel of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, McMinnville, will be open for visitation from noon to 7 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Mitchell died Aug. 11, 2003, in Salem Hospital. She was 78.

She was born Oct. 12, 1924, in Banks, the daughter of Leo and Flonnie Turner Aerts. She graduated from Banks High School in 1942, then attended Pacific University and Oregon State University. She received a master's degree from Columbia University.

She and Donnell Mitchell were married Aug. 21, 1952, in Roy.

She worked as a teacher for 53 years at Willamina High School, where she taught shorthand, typing and keyboarding. She retired in 1999.

Mrs. Mitchell was grand marshal of the Willamina July 4 Celebration in 1999. She recently received an award from Willamina High School classes of 1952-53 for her teaching in Willamina.

She and her husband had raised thoroughbred and saddlebred horses, showing and racing them in Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Arizona and Canada. She belonged to the Fendall Club in Willamina. She had served on the altar society of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Grand Ronde. She enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include two nieces, Ellen Martin and Rosa Gotchell, both of Portland; two nephews, Charles Mitchell of Port Orford and Floyd Mitchell of Colton, Calif.; and two first cousins, George Turner of Gaston and James Manuel of Portland.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Donnell and Lucille Mitchell Scholarship Fund for Willamina High School students in care of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, 135 N.E. Evans St., McMinnville, OR 97128.
