Died, at his home near Newaukum, June 24, 1897, Eliel W. Lawton. Mr. Lawton was born at Hartland, Vermont May 20, 1833. In the summer of 1856 he removed to Minnesota. In October '61, he enlisted in the 3d Minnesota volunteer Infantry. At the expiration of their term of service the regiment was reorganized as the 3d regiment of Minnesota Veteran Volunteers, when he reenlisted with them and served till the close of the war. He married Miss Francis Day in Faribault, Minn., February 14, 1868. In December, 1875 they removed to Montgomery county, Iowa, remaining there five years, subsequently living in the states of Missouri, Kansas and Dakota, removing from the latter state to Washington in May 1889, where the family have since resided. Mr. Lawton was attacked with a cancer in the face, near the throat, about a year and a half ago, which terminated fatally last Thursday. He leaves a wife, two sons and one daughter to mourn his death, the daughter being married and living in South Dakota. Mr. Lawton was laid at rest in the Chehalis cemetery last Saturday afternoon by the members of Joe Hooker post G.A.R. And so another old soldier has gone to join the great majority.
