Elizabeth Burdine Read was born on May 23, 1920, in Florida. She was the daughter of Albert Cushing and Elizabeth A. Burdine Read.

She had one sibling: Albert Cushing Read, Jr.

WEDDING ARTICLE: Lt. Cunningham Weds Ensign Read

Ensign Elizabeth Burdine Read of the WAVES Pensacola, Florida, daughter of Rear Admiral and Mrs. Albert Cushing Read, became the bride of Lt. (j.g.) Charles Dixon Cunningham, of Monroe, USNR, in a ceremony at 6 o'clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, December 6, 1944, in the Naval Air Station Chapel, Pensacola. Chaplain Charles N. Starnes of Barin Field officiated.

White camellias and candlelight formed the setting for the service, and a program of nuptial music was presented by Leonard Gay.

The bride was given in marriage by her father. She was attired in uniform,, as were other members of the wedding party. Her attendants were: Ensign Bertha B. Freeman and Ensign Elizabeth Spaengenberg.

The bridegroom had as his best man Lt. (j.g. ) Donahue, of Philadelphia. Ushers were: Lt. (j.g.) Scashaf and Lt. (j.g.) J.D. Florance.

Immediately after the service, Rear Admiral and Mrs. Read entertained at dinner in the Mustin clubhouse. White roses and tapers in silver candelabra adorned the bride's table. A three-tiered embossed wedding cake and white camellias also added to the appointments.

The bride attended school at Las Collenbettes, in Switzerland. She was graduated from Holton Arms, Washington, D.C., and from Bryn Mawr in the class of 1941. She has been on duty at the Pensacola Naval Air Station for a number of months.

Lt. Cunningham, a native of Monroe, is a son of Robert H. Cunningham of Wadesboro, and the late Mrs. Cunningham. His sister is Mrs. Rob B. Laney of Monroe. He was graduated from the University of North Carolina, and is on duty as a flight instructor at Barin Field, Pensacola, Florida.

OBITUARY: Elizabeth "Jackie" Cunningham

ASHVILLE – Mrs. Cunningham, 87, died Friday, May 9, 2008, after a lingering illness. She was a very active member of Grace Episcopal Church and loved gardening and the outdoors. Jackie was involved in volunteer and charity work especially with ABCCM [Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry].

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years Charles "Charlie" Cunningham.

She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law; one daughter; brother; and one granddaughter.

A special thanks to one family, especially one lady, for their loving devotion and attentive care to our mother.

A Memorial service will be held on Friday, May 16, 2008, at 2:00 PM at Grace Episcopal Church with the Rev. Gary Coffey officiating. A reception will be held in the Social Hall immediately following the service.

Morris Funeral Home is assisting the family.
