Born in Middletown, the son of William A. Burkhardt and Elizabeth Marling, he retired in 1965 after 23 years of service with the US Army. He was a master sergeant serving in World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Conflict. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 17, the Elks 2354, the Abingdon V.F.W. #5337, and the D.A.V. He was also a member of the Retirees Association. He had retired from Civil Service after about 10 years with Social Security.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Georgette Juliette Germain Burkhardt; four sons, Daniel K.C. Burkhardt and Michael A. Burkhardt, both of Maryland, William Robert Burkhardt of Georgia, and John Charles Burkhardt, Jr. of Massachusetts; two daughters, Linda S. Martin of Maryland and Patricia J. Falany of Mississippi; one sister, Nelle Forbes of Ohio; ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one son, Richard A. Burkhardt; one daughter, Elizabeth Anne Burkhardt; one brother, William Wilbert Burkhardt; one sister, Elizabeth Burkhardt; and one granddaughter, Lauren Martin.
