Death of Colonel Flory
Another Old Soldier and Respected Citizen Passes Away

The death of Colonel Flory, a prominent and highly respected citizen of Emporia, occurred at his residence on Commercial street last evening at 5:30 o’clock. After years of suffering, the last ten months of which he was confined to his room nearly all of the time, he passed away, leaving behind him the record of an honorable and consistent life. The funeral will be held from the residence to-morrow at 5 o’clock and will be conducted by Rev. F.J. Sauerber, of the First Presbyterian church, of which the deceased was an active member. The burial will take place at Maplewood cemetery under the charge of the Preston B. Plumb and Hancock G.A.R. posts.
The sincere sympathy of the entire city is extended to the bereaved family who have suffered the loss of one who was a devoted husband and a loving parent.
Col. Aaron M. Flory was born in Carrol county, Indiana October 16, 1832. When yet a small boy he moved with his father to Cass county, Indiana, where he lived on a small farm with his parents until he entered the Miami university at Oxford, Ohio, from which he graduated in the year of 1858. After he had finished at Oxford he went to Logansport where he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1859.
On the 26th day of July 1859 he was married to Miss Eliz S. Funston, of Cass county, Ind., who survives him.
He has three children all of whom are still living, Alvin T. Flory, Mrs. D.P. Longenecker and Mrs. W.H. Eastman, all of whom are well known in this city. Col. Flory moved his family to Emporia in 1883 and entered the practice of law in our city which occupation he has continued since when his health would permit, having served our people two years as county attorney.
As a solider, Colonel Flory’s record is without a reproach. He entered the Forty-sixth regiment of Indiana volunteers as captain of company B on the 6th of October, 1861, and arose to major of the regiment, May 26, 1862, and to lieutenant –colonel February 10, 1863. His regiment was in active service for four years, in Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas, was in many important engagements and has to acknowledge but one retreat. Colonel Flory was captured on April 8, 1864, at the battle of Mansfield, or Sabine Cross Roads, and was held prisoner for several months, the most of which time was spent in prison at Tyler, Texas. He escaped from prison on November 13, ’61 (sic) [1864], but the privations and sufferings experienced there had so nearly ruined his health that he has been a sufferer ever since. After escaping, he rejoined his regiment and was mustered out at the close of the war with the rest of the regiment at Louisville.
As a citizen and a soldier Colonel Flory’s name will ever hold an honored place in the memory of Kansas citizens.
