DEATH COMES TO W. J. ESTERLINE
Was Prominent Farmer and Former Aboit Township Trustee
SERVED AS SOLDIER

William J. Esterline, former trustee of Aboit township and for forty years a well known Allen county farmer, died at 1:15 o'clock Saturday morning at the Lutheran hospital in this city at the age of 69 years, 5 months and 8 days. Five months ago Mr. Esterline was stricken by locomotor diaxia and his health failed steadily since that time. He had been a patient at the hospital but a week. The family home is on the county line ten miles west of Fort Wayne.
Mr. Esterline was born near New Carlisle, Ohio, November 7, 1841, received a limited education in the common schools of those days and worked upon a farm until he was 18 years of age. Then he learned the trade of a blacksmith. During the civil war he enlisted as a member of Company I, Seventy-first Ohio Infantry, participating in the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, as well as other engagements during several years of military service.
In 1870 he came to Allen county, purchased the Aboit township farm, upon which the remainder of his life was spent and devoted himself to farming and stock raising. His was one of the fine farm homes of Allen county and Mr. Esterline ranked as one of the representative citizens, enjoying the highest respect and esteem of all who knew him. He was for four years, from 1898 to 1903, trustee of his township, and on several other occasions was republican nominee for places upon the county ticket. Mr. Esterline was twice married and is survived by his widow and nine children - J. Walter Esterline, of Lafayette; W. E., Albert, Samuel A., James O., Frank, Chester, Harry and Miss Hattie Esterline. There are ten grandchildren. Mr. Esterline was a member of the Christian Church at Dunfee.
Mr. Esterline was but 19 years of age when he enlisted as a soldier and he served two years in Sherman's army, participating in many minor engagements as well as the battles of Fort Donaldson and Shiloh. He was discharged for disability in 1864. Upon first coming to Indiana Mr. Esterline engaged in carriage building at Plymouth and later at Columbia City, selling his manufacturing interests after the death of his wife and daughter and locating at Aboit township. The eldest son, John Walter Esterline, was formerly professor of electrical engineering at Purdue University. In addition to the widow and children, the surviving relatives include ten grandchildren, a sister and a brother. For eight consecutive years Mr. Esterline had been superintendent of the Sunday school at Dunfee and was active in religious work.
Funeral Monday morning, with a brief service at the home at 9 o'clock and at the Dunfee Christian church an hour later, the pastor, Rev. Meil, officiating; interment at Lindenwood.

Biography:
W. J. Esterline, of Aboit township, was born in Clark county, Ohio,
November 7, 1841, son of Adam and Elizabeth (Slaybaugh) Esterline.
The father, a native of Maryland, was a shoemaker by occupation, and
died in 1855; the mother who was born near Gettysburg, Penn., died July
5, 1876.

Mr. Esterline received a limited education in the common
schools, and worked as a laborer on the farm until eighteen years of age,
when he took up the blacksmith's trade, at which he was engaged until
1870. He then began farming and stock-raising, at which he is still suc-
cessfully engaged. He purchased in 1870, the farm on which he now
resides, consisting of 152 acres.

He was married to Nancy Jeffries in
1867, and they had one child, Milly, now deceased. Mrs. Esterline died
December, 1868, and in 1871 he was married to Ellen McKinley. They
have seven children: Walter, Edward, Albert, Arthur, Otis, Frank and
Chester.

Mr. Esterline served his country in the late rebellion, being a
member of Company I, Seventy-first Ohio infantry, and was in the
engagement at Pittsburg Landing. Mr. Esterline is a member of the
Lutheran church, also of Columbia Cit}- lodge, 189, F. & A. M.
