William was the son of Abraham Cleaves Jr. and his wife Sarah Cooper. He served in the Civil War Company G, 2nd Regiment, Maine Calvary Volunteers being dismissed from service in 1865. He married Naoma Cooper.

According to census records William and his wife Naoma were the parents of eleven children but there are no records of the four missing children and it is assumed they were either premature or stillbirths that weren't recorded while living up in the very rural sections of Penobscot County.
