Mrs. Lillie Baxter Dies In Auto Crash; Others In Auto Also
The collision of two autos near the Sweetwater bridge beyond Austell on Highway 78 brought immediate death to Mrs. Lillie Baxter, of Dallas, and her nephew, John A. Peacock, of Atlanta, driver of the car in which she was riding, died later at Kennestone Hospital in Marietta. Mrs. Peacock is listed in critical condition at the same hospital. Their children, Ann 10 and David, 1 year old, were in the car; the former suffered a broken leg but the baby was uninjured. The accident happened Sunday afternoon about 1:30 P.M.
The Peacocks were bringing Mrs. Baxter home after a visit with her sister in Atlanta.
Mrs. Ruth Canaler, of Lithia Springs, is listed in critical condition. Reports were that Mrs. (this part is blacked out) a truck and ran head-on into the Peacock car.
Mrs. Baxter was the daughter of the late Marion Tant and Matilda Langford Tant. She had lived her entire life in Dallas where she had many friends. She was an employee of the Dallas Hosiery Mill. She was 65 years old at the time of her death.
Funeral services were held from the New Hope Baptist Church on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 23, at 2 o'clock, with the Rev. Bob Smith and the Rev. Fred Wigley officiating. Burial was in the New Hope cemetery with the Pope Weems Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. She had been a member of the New Hope Church for 40 years.
She is survived by two sons, Johnny H., of East Point, and Elmer, Jr., of Dallas; three daughters, Mrs. Irene Freeman, Mrs. Katie Bates and Mrs. Margaret Burt, of Dallas; a brother, Noah Tant of Griffin; three sisters, Mrs. Etta Spinks, Mrs. Ora Teal, of Dallas and Mrs. Nannie Carter of Atlanta. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Lillie Mae Tant Baxter, born in Burnt Hickory, Paulding County, Georgia. Daughter of the late John Marion Tant and Matilda Ann Lankford Tant. She was a devoted wife to Elmer F. Baxter. The mother of seven children, twin boys Hoyt and Roy Baxter, died in infancy, Irene C. Freeman, Johnny Hartwell Baxter, Elmer "Junior" Baxter, Katie Elizabeth Bates, and Margaret Ann Gravley.
