OBITUARY
IN "THE STANDARD" APRIL 5, 1895
Alphonso Church of Providence, R. I., who
died quite suddenly, at his home a short
time since, was born in Wickford, 1825, and
was the oldest son of the late Dr. George
Hazard Church of this town. His mother, who
is still living, was descended from an old
Connecticut family of Burnhams, and a sister
of the late Gordon W. Burnham of New York.
Mr. Church was for many years a resident of
this town, where he carried on the business of a druggist and apothecary. For eight years in
his earlier manhood he was a resident of Boston engaged in the same business.
His knowledge of drugs was especially marked and discriminating, being thoroughly skilled in the art of compounding. He was a man of natural dignity and great firmness of mind, so interesting, so charming in conversation and manner, as to be beloved of the gods.
About twenty-five years ago he became smitten with blindness; thence he removed to Providence, where he has since lived a very quiet life to the end.
And now there is no more groping in
darkness, for:----
Loosened are the ties that bound thee,
Death the liberator, found thee,
Slumber, darkness and decay
Asunder met thine upward way,
Then from the dust art called of God
To bright, immortal day.
