Son of John Thomas Lindsey, a railroad coachmaker in Richmond, Virginia, by his wife Louisa Emma Sheppard, James settled in 1870 on the Monterey-Cedar Creek Pike within the town of Monterey, Kentucky where he married Mary Jane Dearinger on Nov. 30, 1871 at her father's home. His mother came with him from Virginia and was living in his household in 1880. While a resident of Monterey James operated a stage line and was a stone cutter, but in his later years farmed in Smithfield Precinct, Henry County, Kentucky.
