Mrs. Eliza A. Palmer, mother of Mrs. Emma VanCleave passed away December 31 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. M. Mowry of Boring, Oregon.

Eliza A. Redding was born in the state of Arkansas on February 26, 1843. In 1846 her parents started on the long, lonely trail by ox team to find a new home in the far west. Her father died when the ox-train crossed the Platte River and was buried on the plains. The mother was left with three small children and could only continue on to Oregon helped by kindly members of the train.

In September of 1847, they arrived at the place where Linnton, Oregon now is and began a home in the new land. In 1858 Eliza Redding married John H. Palmer. To this union 9 children were born, 8 of which survive. In 1883 Mr. Palmer died and the lonely widow reared and educated her family.

On her eighty-fifth birthday all her children were present, six daughters and two sons; also 25 grand children and 54 great grandchildren making 85 living descendants who today mourn her loss.

Mrs. Palmer was active in the Pioneer association of Oregon and this year would have been crowned Queen Mother as she would have be lived for 82 years in Oregon.

For many years she spent her summers with her daughter here in Scappoose and was known to all permanent residents who lovingly called her "Grandma Palmer." Many homes contain handiwork fashioned by her diligent fingers.

God gave her the blessing of perfect mentality to the end and she was able to give good-bye messages to her children all of whom ministered to her in her last illness.

One sister, Mrs. J. W. Adams of Vancouver, Washington, remains and her children as follows: Mrs. Elizabeth Kimble, Vancouver, Wash., Mrs. Sarah Jones, Portland, Mrs. Jane Kline, Westport, Will Palmer, Mrs. Nell Collins, Bend, Mrs. Emma Van Cleave, Scappoose, Charles Palmer, Estacada, Mrs. Minnie Mowry, Boring.

Interment was made in Portland on January 5 at 1 o'clock.
