David was the youngest of 10 children born to David Worthly Mitchem, Sr. and Martha Ann Willett Mitchem, of Lowell, NC. He was married to the former Lillian Mason. They had 5 daughters and 1 son: Alta Mitchem Durden; Rita Mitchem Waldrop; Hugh Mason Mitchem; Martha Mitchem; Vivian Mitchem Dellinger; and Faye Mitchem Bumgardner.

He was an avid fox hunter and loved his family. He had a great sense of humor and loved to spin a yarn. He would often "buck dance" around the kitchen, and sing silly little songs to his children. He will always be remembered and loved.
