Carroll J. "Mike" Cooney of Las Vegas, formerly of Wallingford and East Haven, died Monday in Las Vegas. He was 87.
He was born in Wallingford. Before his retirement, he was employed by the state Military Department with the National Guard He was a U.S. Army infantry veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a life member and past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Maj. Raoul Lufbery Post 591 in Wallingford. He was a Wallingford police officer from 1944 to 1949 and later served as a supernumerary of the department. He also served as a marshal of the Wallingford Memorial Day Parade.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie Gianotti Cooney; a daughter, Carol Lynn Taubert of Las Vegas; a sister, Rita Stankwitz of Wallingford, and three grandchildren. A sister, Catherine Cooney Satton, and a brother, William F. Cooney, died earlier.
The funeral and burial in the State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown will be private. There are no calling hours.
