Vachel D. Whatley originally enlisted as a Private on May 13, 1862 in Company D, 3rd Battalion Georgia Infantry "The Barnesville Blues". In May 1863, this company became Company B, 4th Battalion Georgia Sharpshooters. The next day third Company C was created by taking members from Company B and from the 37th Ga Infantry. Vachel was one of the members of Company B to be transferred to Company C. He appears as a Private in records until he was killed in action at Franklin.
