Billy D. Smith of Edgewater Park passed away into God's loving and eternal care Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, at Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia. He was 86.
Born and raised in Dumas, Ark., he had been a resident of Edgewater for the last 51 years.
Mr. Smith was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, attached to the 13th Armored Division and the 491st Field Artillery Battalion, during the Battle of the Bulge. He did his training at Fort Sill, Okla., and in England, before being deployed to France, Germany and Austria for the duration of the war.
After World War II, he worked as a lineman for Arkansas Power Co.
He then re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, where he was stationed in Alaska.
He returned to New Jersey and became employed as an electrical forman for the Department of Civil Engineering at McGuire Air Force Base.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Beverly Knights of Columbus 3831.
He was an avid reader, a Philadelphia Phillies fan and enjoyed gardening.
He was the husband of the late Carmela Smith; and father of the late Emilie Ramey.
He is survived by his son, William D. Smith (Melissa) and his daughters, Diane Boock and Patricia Smith (friend Frank D'Ermino); his sister, Laura Jo Wilson; his grandchildren, Jerry Boock, Heidi Fionda, Bridgett Nelson and Rebecca Ramey; and his great-grandchildren, Brianna, Noel, Natalie, Brian, Ford and Dominic.
His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Church, Warren Street, Beverly. Interment will be held in Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Friday at Dennison-McGee Funeral Home, 869 Beverly Road, Burlington.
