He was born Aug. 24, 1919, in Big Sandy to the late George Washington and Nannie Kennedy Glenn. Following graduation from Big Sandy High School, James earned an Associates Degree from Henderson County Junior College. He worked for the federal program known as Works Progress Administration that built Tyler State Park.
He was soon drafted into the U.S. Army where he served in North Africa. After being honorably discharged, he went to work for Lone Star Gas Company serving a 25-year tenure, with assignments in Athens, Canton, Gainesville, Mesquite, Lancaster, Kerrville and Walters, Okla. He retired to Athens in 197 1, where he was an active member of Disabled American Veterans.
James was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Glenn, in 2000; grandson, Chad Glenn; brothers, Walter Ray Glenn, George W. Glenn Jr.; sisters, Kathleen Moody, Audi Mae Liles, Rosalie Hill, Lila Pearl Head and Lorene Glenn.
Survivors include a son, Jimmy Glenn and wife Janis of Kerens; daughter, Jenny Hoover of Pompano Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Andy Glenn and wife Sarah of San Antonio, Tony Glenn of Sherman, Carrie DeAngelo of Pompano Beach, Fla.; and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers include Granville Lee Hills, Y.A. Hill, Robert Hill, Joe Glenn, Charles Glenn and Billy Glenn.
Honorary pallbearers are Fred Marsh, Sonny Marsh and Eddie Marsh.
Visitation for family and friends will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011, at the funeral home.
