Louis R. Ryan was a well-known miner who passed away in his Columbia home Wednesday afternoon following a fifteen year long illness.

In 1931, Louis received a spinal injury while mining at his gold mine in Tuolumne County. He was rendered partially disabled and confined mostly to bed for the remainder of his life.

Mr. Ryan had resided in Columbia for thirty years and had worked in several of the larger goldmines in the county. Having been born and living his entire life in the Mother Lode, Mr. Ryan was forced to retire early due to his declining health.

Funeral services for Mr. Ryan were held from the Bigelow Mortuary in Sonora at 2:00 p.m. Saturday under the auspices of Reverend Will J. Callahan, pastor of the Standard Community Church. Interment was in the Columbia City Cemetery.

Mr. Ryan was survived by his wife, Lucille, of Columbia; three daughters: Mrs. Orbie Fuentes, of Tuolumne City; Vivian Schoettgen, of Columbia; and Louise Mantzouranis, of Sacramento; two sons: Morris Ryan, of Standard; and Louis Ryan, Jr., of Jacksonville; four sisters: Lucille Jacobsen, and Maude Ortiz, of Lodi; May Davis, of Valley Springs; Mattie Plummer, of Columbia; two brothers: Dewey Barry, of Modesto; and James Barry, of Nevada City, and a large number of nephews and nieces.
