Martin V. Garn was born in Sandusky county, Ohio, February 2, 1839, and died in Fremont, Ind., July 27, 1910, aged 71 years, 5 months and 25 days.

He was married to Anna Boor in the year 1859. To this union was born four children, Eva E., William W., J. Wesley, and Vern D., all of whom survive, together with thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He enlisted in the union army and served nine months. He was in the battle of Shilo, after which he became very sick and was sent home on a furlough. Not regaining his health, he was honorably discharged in 1863. He moved from Ohio in 1864, and settled in Steuben county, which has ever since been his home.

Early in life he became a Christian and all who knew him will testify to his sterling integrity as a Christian and citizen. He was always found on the right side of every moral and religious question. He was a staunch prohibitionist and voted on that side every chance he had. On account of his earnest views on this subject he was criticized a great deal by those who held rather loose views on the temperance question. He was a great leader in church and Sunday school work and was untiring in his efforts in this work. He was a good husband and kind father, one to whom any one could come for aid as he was always willing to assist all in his power.

He was seized with mortal illness while attending a camp meeting at Findlay, Ohio, and while all that human skill could do, was done for him it was without avail. He leaves a community of friends who will mourn their loss as well as his immediate family. We have this glorious assurance that as "His labors are over he rests in the Lord."

The funeral was held at the home Friday afternoon, Rev. Wm. Simpkins officiating. Interment in the old cemetery.
