Longtime Groveland resident Henry H. Pruett, a retired lieutenant commander of the Navy, died June 28 at a Sonora care home. He was 93.
Mr. Pruett was born in Ozark, Ala., one of 13 children. He enlisted in the Navy in October 1934. He served during World War II, where he saw action in both the Pacific and Atlantic theaters. He participated in the Normandy invasion at Sword Beach (British sector) and also saw action at Attu in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. He ended his career with the rank of lieutenant commander and as the captain of a radar ship. He retired in February 1958 as commanding officer of the Naval and Marine Corp Reserve Training Center in San Mateo.
After retiring from the Navy, he worked as a production manager for Circus Foods in San Francisco for 10 years. He and his wife moved to Groveland in 1978. From 1982 to 1983, he was the chairman of the environmental committee at Pine Mountain Lake. During his life, Mr. Pruett was instrumental in founding three churches: Oakdale Presbyterian Church in Norfolk, Va., Bethany Presbyterian Church in San Bruno and Groveland Evangelical Free Chuch in Groveland.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Scottish Rite and Square Club. He also was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Groveland and Marine Corp Club in San Francisco. He enjoyed playing golf and got a hole-in-one at Pine Mountain Lake Golf Course. He also enjoyed working and gardening around his home.

Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Big Oak Flat.
