Elda Clara Buckmaster, 86, of Muskogee, Oklahoma died Monday, February 14, 2011 in Noble, Oklahoma after a challenging year with Alzheimer's disease. According to Ecclesiastes, there is a right time for everything: a time to be born and a time to die. Valentine's Day, the day of love, is the day God chose for her to die - and what a beautiful day for her to join her loved ones, especially her husband Haskell ("Hack"). She was born in Bloomer, Wisconsin on March 31, 1924, to Friedericka Bertha Boese and William Rufledt. She and her 3 siblings grew up on the family dairy farm where they worked hard, played and enjoyed music. Elda never missed an opportunity to dance! After being introduced by a cousin during World War II, Elda became pen-pal sweethearts with a soldier, Haskell Buckmaster of Checotah, Oklahoma. After several years of exchanging letters, Haskell went by train to Wisconsin to meet his sweetheart in person. A few months later, Elda moved from "up North to down South" to Muskogee, and they were married on July 18, 1947. Although their backgrounds were worlds apart, she from a strict German heritage, he a laid back southerner, Elda and Haskell created a life together centered on their church, friends, and family. Their marriage reflected the mutual faith, humor, respect, and love they shared until his death in 1986. While she remained a northerner at heart, she was welcomed with open arms as an Okie and lived in Muskogee for 64 years. From the farm to factories during the war, and then 35 years as an accountant at Phoenix Federal Saving and Loan in Muskogee, Elda was a dedicated, hard working woman. She was a successful business woman, supportive and loving mother, grandmother, great grandma, and a compassionate friend and aunt. One of her best skills was making a stranger into a friend and making everyone feel special. Elda was quite creative and had varied talents. She was known for her cooking skills, making wonderful pies, wedding and birthday cakes. She also loved to knit, sew, and played the piano and organ beautifully. She was an active and devoted member of First Lutheran Church since 1947 and participated in many groups and activities throughout the years. The Tuesday quilting group was a favorite of hers until she moved to Norman a year ago. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, her brother, Richard Rufledt, sister, Edna Roecker, and granddaughter, Sara. Elda is survived by her daughter, Betty Jane Baker and her husband, Quincy of Norman, OK and their three children: Ashley and her husband, Chad Kimbell of Austin, TX, Adam Baker of Norman, OK, and Allison and her husband, Matt Dursus of Norman, OK; great-grandchild, Vienna Jane Kimbell; her brother Bill Rufledt and his wife Lois; sister-in-law, Ruth Rufledt of Bloomer, Wisconsin; and brother-in-law, Dub Abbott of Shepherdsville, Kentucky. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins who greatly enriched her life. The funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, February 18, 2011 at First Lutheran Church in Muskogee. Funeral service arrangements are under the direction of Foster-Petering Funeral Home in Muskogee, OK.
