John C. Hartnup, 81, of 23322 Filmore, Shelby, a resident of Porter County most of his life, died Sunday at Porter Memorial Hospital after a five-week illness.

Born April 3, 1892 in Hobart he was a son of Edgar and Eliza (Reed) Hartnup. On Dec 6, 1941 at East Chicago, he married Lillian Reimers, who survives.

He retired in 1960 as a recorder at U S Steel, Gary Works, after 43 years service. He was an honorary member of the Steel Workers Union and past master of Hobart F and AM Lodge. He returned to Shelby three months ago from Sarasota, Fla., where he moved when he retired.

Surviving besides his widow are two daughters, Mrs. Marion (Ruth) Stockwell, Foley, Ala., and Mrs. Ted (Vera) Brice, Phoenix, three sons, Harry and Wayne, both of Sarasota, and Robert of Lancaster, Pa.; three step-daughters, Mrs. George (Betty) Herren, Valparaiso, Mrs. Eddie (Doris) Scott, Schererville, and Mrs. Ernest (Lois) Scott, Shelby; a brother, George of Fort Wayne, 30 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Wetmore Funeral Home with the Rev. Arnold C. Westphal, Michigan City, officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Tuesday.
