Erasmus Asbury Samuels was the son of War of 1812 veteran Shadrach Samuels of VA. and wife Margaret (Phillips) Samuels. He was the grandson of Revolutionary War veteran, Pvt. (later Reverand) Joseph Samuels of Page County, VA.

Erasmus A. Samuels and his brothers Joseph and Hiram enlisted in Company D, 52nd Virginia Infantry Regiment (CSA) at Staunton, VA. on July 16, 1861. Brother Hiram G. Samuels died of disease while in service in December, 1861. Brother Joseph M. Samuels was wounded at the battle of McDowell, VA., in May, 1862. Erasmus re-enlisted in Company I and later Company E of the 1st Virginia Cavalry, serving until captured in September, 1864. The 1st Virginia Cavalry saw action during the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Brandy Station, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor, among others.

Erasmus' surviving brother, Joseph, was a schoolteacher in Augusta County, VA., and his sister, Elizabeth, was a schoolmistress in the same county. Erasmus became a teacher as well, moved to Pendleton County, WV., and taught school near Deer Run and Upper Tract, Pendleton County, WV. during the late 1800's.

On March 16, 1876, he married Phoebe Virginia Lough in Pendleton County, WV., and they eventually had nine children. The couple had five sons, Joseph Cleveland Samuels, Tilden Jackson Samuels, Giles H. Samuels, Smith Dewitt Samuels, and James Lester Samuels. Their four daughters were Bessie Lee Samuels, Vidie Lee Samuels, Agnes May Samuels, and Susan Bertha Samuels.
