Horace "Maynard" Blevins - ABINGDON, VA.

Horace "Maynard" Blevins, 83, 517 McCurry Road, Unicoi, died Friday, March 29, 2002, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home. Mr. Blevins was a Unicoi County native and a son of the late C.J. and Alice Garland Blevins. He retired as a schoolteacher from Unicoi Elementary School after 35 years of service. Mr. Blevins had also taught in the G.I. Farm program in Unicoi County. He was a graduate of East Tennessee State College. Mr. Blevins was a World War II Air Force veteran. He was the founder of Limestone Cove First United Methodist Church and was instrumental in the organization of the Limestone Cove Community Center. Mr. Blevins served a term as a Unicoi County commissioner. He attended Maranatha Tabernacle Church. Mr. Blevins was preceded in death by one infant daughter; two brothers, Howard and Carsie Blevins; and four sisters, Elsie Pate, Sarah Morris, Fannie Davis and Delia Linville. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Josephine Tilson Blevins; three sons, Charles Blevins, Surgoinsville, and Walter Blevins and Kenneth "Spencer" Blevins, both of Unicoi; two daughters, Alice Miller and Wanda Schroder, both of Unicoi; seven grandchildren; seven great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial song service for Horace "Maynard" Blevins, 83, 517 McCurry Road, Unicoi, who died Friday, will be held Sunday, March 31, 2002, at 8 p.m. in Maranatha Tabernacle Church with Pastors E.L. Wheeler and Estel Williams officiating. The body will be taken to the church at 3 p.m. Sunday, where the family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until service time at 8 p.m. Family and friends will meet in Bell Cemetery, Limestone Cove, at 11 a.m. Monday for the committal service. Active pallbearers will be grandsons, Wally Blevins, Chad Cooper, Wesley Blevins, Travis Blevins, Matthew Miller and the Rev. Steve Cochran. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary King, Lloyd Garland, Fowler Ragland, Steve Simerly, Paul Berry, Keith Etter, Vernon Sneyd, Ricky Sneyd, and Jim Lafollette, preachers of Maranatha Tabernacle Church and Mr. Blevins' former students. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Maranatha Tabernacle Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 963, Erwin, TN 37650. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Josephine Tilson Blevins; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Charles and Diane Blevins, Surgoinsville, Walter Blevins, Unicoi, and Kenneth "Spencer" Blevins, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Alice and Gurney Miller and Wanda and Charlie Schroder, all of Unicoi; five grandsons, Wally and wife Renae Blevins, Chad and wife Kim Cooper, Wesley Blevins, Matthew and wife Chastity Miller and Travis Blevins; two granddaughters, Maria and husband Roy Benavides and Alison; seven great-grandchildren, Cheyenne, Sierra, Brionnah, Samantha, Acacia, Mattie and Ali.
