Michael moved his family from Cumberland county, Pennsylvania, to Wapella county, Iowa, in the early 1860s. For some reason he changed the spelling from LOHR to LORE. He served Co. D, 36th Regiment, Iowa Infantry during Civil War. His leg was injured when a horse fell on him while retreating from the Battle of Mark's Mill. Michael had seven children with his first wife Barbara Landis: Elizabeth (1850), Henry (1853), George (1854), Levi (1857), Mary (1860), Lucinda (1863) and Lillie (1869). Barbara died in 1869. Michael then married Elizabeth Ann Jones. After her death, he married Phoebe Crispin who collected his Civil War pension as his widow. They had one daughter, Rosella (1887).
