John Ira Parcel ran a "hack" between Ashmore and Westfield, running twice a day, in the days before trains came to Westfield. When the roads were too muddy for a horse and buggy, he would go on horseback or his son would walk. (Article by the Clark County Genealogical Society)

Saturday evening, we received a telegram announcing the death at 3:30 that afternoon of John Ira Parcel or "Uncle Ira" as he was familiarly known. Mr. Parcel had been ailing for nearly a year and many times it was thought death was at hand, but he always rallied, and then for a few days or weeks would be apparently as well as ever. But the end came Saturday and he passed peacefully away, surrounded by weeping relatives and friends. (Clark County Herald, September 11, 1889)

John Ira Parcel married Catherine Van Sickle on 12/13/1827 in Butler OH. They had 7 children: Squire, William Henry, Mary Ann, John Wesley, Albert, Martha Jane, and Abraham. Catherine died on 1/6/1847.

John Ira Parcel married Janette (Jane) McQuern on 8/26/1847. They had 8 children: Frances Caroline, Margaret Adaline, Samuel Newton, Joseph S., Catherine Isabel, Alexander W.B., Malinda Florence, and Sarah Elizabeth.

Mr. Parcel has been a member of the United Brethren Church for 64 years.
