Elsie was born July 11, 1925, the second oldest of 18 children born to Frank and Anna (Kuntz) Schulz. She grew up and attended country school. Elsie worked on the family farm after school for a few years. On Sept. 12, 1945, she was married to Mathias Maershbecker Jr. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Richardton. The couple made their home on the Maershbecker homestead near Hebron and it was here where they raised their children: Ann, Beverly, Harold, Sharon, Amy, Lois, Patricia and Natalie. The couple retired to Dickinson in 1991.
In July 2010, Elsie moved to Bismarck, where she made her home at St. Gabriel's Community Health System. Elsie enjoyed quilting and donated countless quilts to various charities over the years. She was active in RSVP and enjoyed playing pinochle and fishing. Elsie also loved visiting with family and friends.
Survivors include a son, Harold (Sharon) Maershbecker, New England; seven daughters, Ann Riedlinger, Crookston, Minn., Beverly (Robert) Streifel, Wing, Sharon (Roy) Romanyshyn, Dickinson, Amy (Jeff) Kooren, Gillette, Wyo., Lois Salveson, Bismarck, Patricia (Terry) Tomchuk, Dickinson, and Natalie (Ronald) Salveson, Thief River Falls, Minn.; siblings, Viola Sand, Dickinson, Pauline (Albert) Lantz, Dickinson, Agnes (Fred) Heidecker, Dickinson, Gladys Rummel, Dickinson, Mary Ann (Charles) Hoff, Richardton, Delores (Elmer) Wiege, Rapid City, S.D., Geraldine (Phil) Grayson, Dickinson, Dorothy (Bernie) Buresh, Lincoln, Neb., Jim Schulz, Tucson, Ariz., Mike (Margaret) Schulz, Dickinson, Kathleen Lindeman, Ft. Collins, Colo., Ralph (Alice) Schulz, Dickinson, Inez (Merlyn) Hamann, Richardton, and Jackie (Ralph) Messmer, Bismarck; 19 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mathias; three siblings, Alfred Schulz, Bernice Harrington and Willy Schulz; two sons-in-law, Dennis Riedlinger and Rodney Salveson; and two grandchildren, Shane Kooren and Denise (Riedlinger) Sorenson.
