Another man is hurt in the wreck on Highway 22 By Eunice Kim Statesman Journal A 44-year-old Bend man died and another man was critically injured Friday night in a single-car crash on Highway 22E near Gates. Daniel Lynn Dickey was killed when he lost control of his 2004 Toyota Tundra pickup on black ice east-bound near milepost 38 and hit a tree about 9:40 p.m., said Lt. Gregg Hastings, a state police spokesman. The car spun around and went off the south side of the highway The driver's side of the pickup struck a large tree. Dickey was pronounced dead at the scene, Hastings said. A passenger in the front seat, Christopher J. Cruz, 37, of Bend, was injured. He was taken by medical helicopter to Oregon Health & Science University hospital, where officials said he was in serious condition Saturday. Cruz's daughter, Halley J. Cruz, 7, of Salem, was in a rear seat and suffered minor injuries. She was taken to Salem Hospital, where she was treated and released. Everyone in the truck was wearing safety restraints when the crash occurred, Hastings said. Several other crashes occurred in the area around the time of the wreck because of ice. Oregon State Police troopers were investigating. Gates Fire personnel and Oregon Department of Transportation officials helped at the scene.

Daniel Lynn Dickey, of Bend, died Dec. 15 of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. He was 44. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Niswonger-Reynolds Chapel. Mr. Dickey was born April 14, 1962, in Santa Ana, Calif., to James and Margaret (Laddusaw) Dickey. Mr. Dickey worked for Comfort Insulation in Bend for many years. He enjoyed giving to charities, fishing, camping, shopping and spending time with his children. He moved to Bend in 1994. Survivors include a son, Jonathan, of Bend; two daughters, Angela and Danielle, both of Bend; his mother, of Bend; two brothers, Wayne, of La Pine, and David, of San Bernardino, Calif.; and a sister, Marilyn Smith, of Twenty-nine Palms, Calif. He was preceded in death by his father and a sister.
