LeRoy was baptized and confirmed as a youth at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Audubon. He attended rural school Douglas No. 3, then helped operate the family farm.
On May 31, 1941, he was united in marriage to Virginia Dent at a church parsonage in Kansas City, MO. They operated the family farm northwest of Audubon, later purchasing the farm. They retired from farming in 1997.
