LeRoy Mortensen, son of Philip Mortensen and Anna Margaretha Frees Mortensen, was born December 25, 1919, on a farm west of Irwin, Iowa.
In the spring of 1920, he moved with his parents and older brothers, Elmer and Earl, to the farm 2 miles north and 6 miles west of Audubon.
LeRoy was baptized and confirmed as a youth at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Audubon. He attended rural school Douglas No. 3, then helped operate the family farm.
On May 31, 1941, he was united in marriage to Virginia Dent at a church parsonage in Kansas City, MO. They operated the family farm northwest of Audubon, later purchasing the farm. They retired from farming in 1997.
