Another Pioneer Gone

Thomas Combs, who died at the home of his son, James G. Combs, in Colfax, December 20, 1902, was a pioneer, having settled in Whitman County in 1879.

He was born in White County, Tennessee, November 24, 1839. When but three weeks old his mother died, and while he was yet a small boy his father moved to Missouri. With the exception of about a year spent in Illinois, he lived in Missouri until 1879, when he crossed the plains to Washington, settling on a farm near St. John, which farm he owned at the time of his death.

In 1860 he married Martha J. Johnson of Polk County, Missouri, who died in 1888.

Two sons and two daughters, all grown, survive him. For about eleven years, during the last two of which he was practically helpless, Mr. Combs suffered with paralysis, which was the cause of his death. Interment was at St. John.
