Antietam's parents were Private Peter Mann of the 8th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Regiment and Ann Martin Mann. This was the second marriage for both as both Peter and Ann as their first spouses were deceased. Peter Mann was born in Scotland and Ann Mann in England. Antietam Mann was named for the Battle of Antietam in the Civil War in which her father was killed. Major General Ambrose Burnside was the commander of the 9th Corps in which the 8th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Regiment served and Antietam's middle name is derived from that. The Battle of Antietam was on September 17, 1862
