CPL US ARMY - KOREA - Awarded the Purple Heart.

SHERIDAN - Vinal E. Abbott, 78, died Feb. 10, 2011, at Maine Veterans Home, Caribou. He was born July 16, 1932, in Skowhegan, the son of Cora (Abbott) Scott.

Vinal served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1954. He served in the Korean War, where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart.

He married Maude Lafland Sept. 27, 1953. They lived in Massachusetts for many years prior to returning to Sheridan in October 1975. He was employed at Levesque's Lumber Mill from 1975 to 1979.

Vinal is survived by four sisters-in-law, Betty Spooner and husband, Ivan Jr., of North Anson, Annie York of Solon, Phyllis Cloukey and husband, Rene Sr., of Sheridan, and Lillian Clark and husband, Alfred Jr., of Ware, Mass.; one brother-in-law, Philip Lafland and wife, Barbara, of Belchertown, Mass.; many nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by special friends, Alma Jones and Karen Boynton of Washington.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 51 years, Maude (Lafland) Abbott, Feb. 17, 2005; his mother-in-law, Hannah Carter, in November 2006; his mother, Cora Scott, in October 1995; and his stepfather, Louis, in 1955.

Spring interment will be at Maine Veterans Cemetery, Caribou.
