Raymond B. Abel, 81, Sioux Falls, S.D. died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, in the Sioux Falls Sioux Valley Hospital's Hospice room, following a lingering illness with cancer.

He was born on March 16, 1919, at Bridgewater,S.D., to Willard and Bernice Rohde Abel. His family moved to Artesian, S.D., for a few years and then to Presho, S.D., where he graduated from high school in 1938. He had been a resident of Sioux Falls, S.D., since June 1979, and prior to this had live.d in Garden Grove, Calif., for 16 years and in Bozeman, Mont., for eight years. He had worked for GTE for two years and then for the Rod Frazier liquor & Deli Store chain as a manager in southern California for several years, retiring in 1974.

He enjoyed golfing, playing cards, traveling, gardening and raising vegetables and then sharing them with family and friends.

He is survived by: his wife, Shirley; a nephew Dennis Abel, Berthoud, Colo.; four nieces, Donna Reno, Kennewick, Wash.; Diane McCue, Clackamas, Ore.; Mary Dolezal, Sedalia, Colo.; and Connie McColley, Kirkland, Wash.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; two brothers, Harold and Wilmer Abel; and two sisters, Mildred Bauder and Lois Roberts.
