NOTE: THIS JOHN does not have a middle name of Elijah. It has yet to be proven to me, and I will not make the change.

It is believed that John & Mary purchased Priests Mill and established the town of Peakesville, Pr. Wm. Co. Va., it had at one time a post office. This town site is now a housing addition called Hunters Ridge off the Pr.Wm. Parkway. There is one road there called Peaks Mill Dr. When Development of this addition began I found this area from a WPA writing and description of the area, a foreman for road construction told me they were naming the streets the same as of old in Peaksville. That was exciting and he informed me of the old cemetery on the hill. There is and an old cemetery at the S.E. corner of Coloriver Rd. & Hemlock Ridge Ct. the next street South is Peaks Mill Dr. (Manassas,VA) Appears to have numerous burials but only a few headstones, the others are simple Stones to mark the sunken graves. I would suspect there are some Peake's buried in that old grave site. Two of the headstones have Carter another one has Keys name. The cemetery sits on a slight hill, hard to see yet it now has a chain link fence to protect the gravesites. Neighbors there are very protective of the area, and came out to see what my interest was, so I informed him that this property was once owned by my family. I feel this cemetery should have the name of Peake Family Cemetery.

The Peakes cut timber and donated much for the building of their church. In the old Movie "The Unconquered", starring Gary Cooper, he mentions going to the Peaksville Fair, yet the book edition makes no mention of this place. Where did Hollywood come up with Peakesville?

Here is an advertisement for sale of this property offered by their great grandson Henry Peake:

Alexandria Gazette 1 Oct 1829
PUBLIC SALE OF VALUABLE LAND will be exposed to public sale, on the premises,on the 12th day of December next, if not previously disposed of, the TRACT OF LAND on which the subscriber formerly lived, in the county of Prince William, containing between SIX AND SEVEN HUNDRED ACRES, situated only 22 miles from Alexandria, 12 from Dumfries, and 8 from the Occoquan Mills, where produce may be disposed of at the Alexandria prices.
Two thirds of this land is very heavily timbered, consisting of white oak of the largest size, black oak, hickory, beech, &c &c. there are one hundred acres of low ground, the third of which is in timber, the remainder was formerly, and still made be made a valuable meadow; there is also a GRIST MILL, now out of repair, the only one in the neighborhood, and an excellent situation for
a Distillery, there being none within 18 miles of the place. The springs are very numerous, so much so as to form the run which turns the mill, and furnishes an abundance of water, except in the dry season.
For a grazing farm, there is none in Virginia superior, as it is remarkably adapted toclover and plaster (the latter of which may be had only eight miles distance at the Alexandria price) no forty acres being without a never failing spring.
Persons wishing to purchase will do well to attend on that day, as the terms will be of the most accommodating kind, no payment being required for several years after the sale. The land will be shown to persons wishing to examine by Mr. Milstead, living on the premises. Any communications made on the subject must be directed to the subscriber, near Newtown, Frederick County Virginia.

I was once criticized for not having the EXACT burial spot for this person!!! My response is as follows: Burial: In the good earth that GOD provided for them in Virginia, most likely on their farm land, all decayed and destroyed or plowed under after all these years. It is not important to know exactly WHERE, you probably would never find them anyway, but you are more than welcome to go hunting/looking for them, they will be waiting, good luck. I will be waiting to hear of your success in locating them, let me know ASAP, OK? JoAnne Peake
