Obituary

Samuel Look Avery was born December 9, 1846 at Aurora New York. He married Kate Hamilton April 17 1877 in Louisville Kentucky. Kate Hamilton was the daughter of Henry Christ Hamilton and his 1st wife Rachel Swearingen Hamilton. He was educated at the Phillips Academy at Andover Massachusetts. And was associated with his father in the manufactur of plows, which became one of the great enterprises of the South. He was a soldier in the Civil War, one of the organizers of the Commercial Club and of the Board of Trade in Louisville; One of the promoters of the Great Southern Exposition at Louisville.

He was also a member of the Board of Charities, established the Eighth Generation. Also helped to establish the Fire Insurance Company known as "Samuel L. Avery & Company; Founded the Home and Savings Fund Company and was it's president until his death. He also began the publication of "Home and Farm", an agricultural paper that he later sold. He was an elder at the Presbyterian Church and a librian of the Warren Memorial Presbyterian Sunday School. And a member of the Scottish Society. He died February 27 1907 in Louisville
