John W. Decker, a well-known resident of this town, died at his residence on Main Street, this village, at about 6:30 this morning, aged 58 years, from the effects of dropsy of the heart.
The funeral will take place Monday forenoon at 10 o'clock from the residence, and the remains will be interred in the cemetery at Sparrowbush.
Mr. Decker was the son of David Decker and was born April 20, 1820, near Deckertown, N.J. When about 5 years of age, he removed with his parents to Sparrowbush, where he resided until 1865, following the occupation of a farmer. In that year he removed to Port Jervis and engaged in the boot and shoe trade with Mr. N. R.Highby under the firm name of Decker & Highby, which they continued three or four years. Since then and for about nine years he has been employed as station watchman at the Erie passenger depot in this village. This position he continued to fill up to within about two weeks prior to his death, when he was attacked by dropsy of the heart. He was able to attend church last Sunday and was out in town on Wednesday of this week. Since that day he has rapidly declined, death relieving him of his sufferings this morning.
Since he was 21 yers of age he had been a member of the Baptist Church of Port Jervis. During the past 20 years he has been a deacon of that church. Mr. Decker was a plain, unassuming man, a consistent Christian, one whose heart was in the church, a good citizen, a most exemplary man, and greatly respected by all who knew him. He paid but little attention to public matters, and was generally a home man in the most pleasant meaning of that expression.
While residing in Sparrowbush Mr. Decker was elected one of the Highway Commissioners of the town of Deerpark, which office he held in 1846, 47 and 48. We believe this was the only public office he ever held. He gave a great deal of time to the Baptist Church and there is no doubt that the present successful condition of this church is owing largely to his efforts.
Mr. Decker was the father of five children, three whom are living; one is the wife of William I. Yarrington of Carbondale, Pa., another the wife of Harrison King of Otisville, and the other is Mr. John E. Decker, ticket agent in this village. Of his deceased children one was the wife of Mr. M.V. Heller, Erie agent in Port Jervis, and the son, William Walter Decker, died in a hospital at or near Fredericksburgh, Va., during the late war.
His wife survives him.
