He was Captain of Company G, 13th SCVI. He was captured at Gettysburg and spent the remainder of the war as a POW.

Death of Capt J. F. Banks

Passed away on Tuesday Morning--A Brave Confederate Soldier and a Worthy Citizen.

Capt. John F. Banks of the St. Philips Sect of Newberry County, died at his home on Tuesday morning, after a lingering illness of considerable duration, at the age of sixty five years. Captain Banks is survived by a wife and several children, whose grief the whole community shares.

The deceased leaves behind him the name of an honorable and worthy citizen. As a Confederate soldier he was efficient and fearless, a Second Lieutenant in Company G, of the Thirteenth South Carolina regiment, serving later as captain in the same company. Later he taught school successfully, and finally settled in the St. Philips section, where he remained an enterprising planter and useful man until his death. He married the daughter of the late George A Counts. Capt Banks was twice elected to the state legislature from Newberry county.

The deceased has been in ill health for a considerable time before his death. A few weeks ago he was operated on for appendicitis by Dr. LeGrand Guerry, of Columbia assisted by several physicians of this locality. The operation was temporarily successful and at the time large hopes for his recovery were entertained. His sturdy constitution made a gallant fight, but some days ago he began to sink and became gradually weaker until the end on Tuesday morning.

The funeral services were held at St. Philips church, the pastor P.H.E.Derrick officiating. The interment was in St. Philips Cemetery.

John F. Banks was my great grandfather and I appreciate the work you have put into his memorial.

I would appreciate it if you would add another of his children. He had a son named Clifford Banks, who left South Carolina and moved to the great lakes area. My mother told me about him and that his son ended up in Midland, Texas.
