PIONEER OF NOVESTA TOWNSHIP PASSED AWAY James Bruce, CiviL War Veteran, Settled in Novesta Wilderness in 1872. James Bruce, a Civil War veteran and early pioneer of Novesta township, died at his home in Deford on Friday, Nov. 8. He had been ailing for a long time and was most patient and cheerful during his whole sickness. Mr. Bruce was born in Summit, Schoharie county, New York, on June 25, 1832. At the age of twenty years, he came to Lapeer, Mich., and a year latter married Mary Jane Silsbury. To this union five children were born. In 1863 he enlisted in the 10th Mich. Cavalry, serving during the remainder of the war. A year after he came from the war, his wife died and later he married Esther Evans, of Elba, Mich., and to this union two children were born. In January, 1872, he moved to Novesta township, which was a wilderness, and endured all the hardships of pioneer life. Mr. Bruce was a man of sterling qualities and was held in high esteem in the community in which he lived. The funeral service was held at his home Sunday afternoon at two o'cIock.
