Leigh Edwin Sheppard, 36, of Elkader, Clayton Co.,IA was killed shortly after 2 o'clock last Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 24, 1945, when he lost control of the pickup truck he was driving which upset on the Farmersburg highway south of the Alvin Lamker farm.
"It appeared that he lost control of the pickup as he went down the hill on loose gravel," said Charles Haberichter, deputy sherriff. Zig Zag tracks were visible in the gravel, the pickup rolling over in the ditch. The top of the cab was crused killing Sheppard. He received a broken neck.
Riding with him at the time was his brother, Merle, who received bad cuts about the head and body and a wrenched back. He was taken to the Postville, Allamakee Co.,Iowa Hospital for treatment and Monday was removed to the veterans' hospital in Des Moines where he died.
The accident was discovered by Alvin Lamker and his son, who were working in the woods nearby. They immediately summoned aid.
Leigh was discharged from the army Oct. 13, following a year and five months of service. He was inducted into the army, May 3, 1944, being sent to Camp Roberts, Calif.,where he remained for give months for training. He was then sent to Camp Patrick Henry, VA, from where he went overseas.
He served in Italy for 11 months taking part in the North Appennines and Po Valley campaigns. He was awarded the GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL, COMBAT INFANTRYMAN'S BADGE, AND THE EUROPEAN AfRICAN MIDDLE EASTERN THEATER RIBBON with two BRONZE BATTLE STARS.
He was born in Wagner township, Clayton Co.,Iowa October 3, 1909, the son of Mr. and Mrs. (Sara "Sadie" I. White) Eli Sheppard.
He received his education in the rural school.
He was married o Sylvia Walter, June 5, 1929, moving to his father's farm, where they lived until they moved to Osborne, where he worked at construction work.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Margaret 15, Dale 10, Robert 5, and Phyllis 13 months; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eli Sheppard; a sister, Mrs. Henry (Grace) Kamaus, of near West Union; two brothers, Lyle of Galesburg, Illinois, and Merle, who was also discharged recently.
Funeral Services were held last Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clock at the Norway Lutheran Church with Rev. S. J. Strandjord officiating.
Burial was in the United Brethren (E.U.B.)Cemetery, on the Gunder Road, RR, West of St. Olaf, Clayton Co., Iowa.
