The announcement of the death of Mrs. Charlotte Letchworth Smith, wife of Byron C. Smith, who departed this life at her late home 86 East Genesee street this morning, will be received with universal regret by her numerous friends in this city. Her death marks the close of a life of singular beauty filled with acts of kindness and generosity.
The deceased was born in the town of Scipio, this county, in 1832, and was a daughter of Josiah Letchworth, one of the oldest and wealthiest pioneer settlers in this county. For the past quarter of a century Mrs. Smith has been an active worker in church and benevolent work. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian church and was a devoted worker for its best interests. For several years she was corresponding secretary and a member of the Board of Managers of the Cayuga Asylum for destitute children. She was also a member of the W. E. & I. union and in years past was an active worker in the Woman’s Christian Temperance union.
She leaves beside a husband two daughters, Mrs. Charles S. Hoyte, wife of Rev. Charles Hoyte of Oak Park, Chicago, Ill., and Mrs. Newton L. Reed, wife of Rev. Newton L. Reed of Olean, N. Y., and one son, Letchworth Smith, who is at present a student at Yale college. She leaves two brothers, Hon. George Letchworth of Glen Iris, Portage, and Josiah Letchworth of Buffalo, who is also owner of the beautiful summer seat at Glenwood on Owasco lake, and one sister, Mrs. William Howland of Sherwoods. No arrangements for the funeral have as yet been made.
