John enlisted on September 1, 1861 at Monticello, Mississippi and was mustered in on May 4, 1862. In October, 1862 he was reported sick in camp. He was severely wounded on July 20, 1864 at Atlanta, Georgia while carrying the regimental Colors. He was sent to a Confederate hospital but later returned to his regiment. He was a Color Bearer at the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee when he was mortally wounded while mounting the enemy's breastworks. He served with three of his brothers, Augustus C. (1832-1862), Cpl. Daniel R. (1840-1928), and William S. (1830-1919). He also lost a cousin, Sgt. Daniel H. Ramsey, Co. A. 3rd Mississippi Infantry who was also mortally wounded at Franklin. The youngest brother, Andrew Houston Longino went on to become Governor or Mississippi. Southern Patriot!
