Husband of Mahala L. (Butts) Cox (1856-1936). First wife was Mary A. (Barley) Cox (1836-1875). Stephen married Mary about 1853 and had the following five children with her: Sarah, Mary, Noah, John W. and Amanda Cox. After Mary died, he married Mahala and he had nine children with her including the following: Thomas, Jesse, Jacob, Stephen, Almon David, Harley Burton and Louella B. Cox. Stephen was a private in the Union Army during the Civil War. On Oct. 15, 1862, he enlisted in the 34th Iowa Infantry, Co. I and he was mustered out in July of 1863. Stephen was the son of Alexander Cox and Sarah (West) Cox.
