His mother was Eliza Glenn

Patterson, J.M., of The Dallas, was born in Cambridge, Ohio, November 26, 1845. He was engaged in the general agency business in Salem from 1869 to 1885, including three years in the U. S. Post Office. Since 1885, he has resided in, The Dalles. He was twice delegate to the Marion County convention, to the Wasco convention three times, and to the state and congressional conventions of 1896.

At age 16 he enlisted in Co. A. 15th Ohio Infantry on 9 September 1861. Eventually he was transferred from the ranks to the Signal Corp where he served until the end of the war. After he mustered out on 9 September 1864, at the end of his three year service, he then re-entered as a civilian, being with the telegraph group until the end in May 1865.

Married Blanche Gray in 1872.

They had four children, all being born in Oregon.
