Frank Wettengel was born to Francis Wettengel and Anna (Schnider) Wettengel in Bohemia (now Czechoslovakie) in 1853. He came to America with his family at the age of 1 1/2 years. On the ship he became ill and was thought to be dead. However, as he was being placed in a sack for burial at sea he uttered a feeble cry and was saved from a watery grave.
Frank moved from Wisconsin to Dunlap, Iowa as a young man and became a cobbler. Later he operated a saloon and for many years sold real estate in the area.
Frank married Anna Stilp and they were parents of eight children: Barbara Shields, Matt, Mayme, Frank, Robert, William, Leo and George.
