Carpenter, John M., Sr. 93 of Pentwater died Wednesday November 26, 2008. He was born in Kalamazoo on March 12, 1915 to Roy W. Carpenter and Ethel (Maxson) Carpenter. He married the former Pauline Burnham in Kalamazoo on June 21, 1936 and she preceded him in death on March 6, 2002. Mr. Carpenter was employed as the comptroller for Farm Bureau Insurance in Lansing, MI. He also worked for the First National Bank and Michigan National Bank in Kalamazoo. He completed two years of college at Western Normal College, now Western Michigan University. He was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church, the Pentwater Yacht Club and the American Radio Relay League. His interests included reading novels by Clancey and Grisham, avid fan of University of Michigan, tinkering in his garage, woodworking, golfing, fishing, tennis, amateur radio operator with the call sign KE4ABS, camping with his family. He was an avid sailor and with his wife sailed Lake Michigan for 25 years. They spent their early years raising their children at Silver Lake. At retirement, they purchased an Airstream and became official snowbirds in Florida. Before Pauline's death in 2002, they celebrated 65 years of marriage together. Mr. Carpenter is survived by son, John (Mary) Carpenter Jr. & daughter, Patricia (William) Brooks; 3 grandchildren, James (Michelle) Emig, Michelle (Brett) Beachum, Charles (Fiancee, Kristina Bernard) Carpenter; 17 great grandchildren; sister, Joyce Shoup. Interment will be in the Pentwater Township Cemetery.
