DIES IN DENVER
John C. Barberia, 28, a veteran of Bataan, died at 9 p.m. yesterday, in the veterans hospital at Fort Logan, Denver, Colo., where he underwent an operation last week.
At his bedside last night were his wife and mother, Mrs. J.B. Barberia. His wife's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Roberson, who drove to Denver last night with his 14-month-old son, Gary, arrived after the death.
Accompanying the body to Carlsbad by train today is Mrs. John C. Barberia. Funeral arrangements are not definite.
Joining the National Guard here in 1938, John Barberia was graduated from Carlsbad High School the following year, and was inducted Jan. 6, 1941.
After receiving basic training at Fort Bliss, Tex., he was shipped out to the Philippines Sept. 8, 1941. In the 200th Coast Artillery, he was captured on Bataan when the Philippines fell.
Making the death march, he was interned at Cabatuan for two and a half years, and afterwards was imprisoned in Japan until that country capitulated.
Since the liberation he had been in ill health. Returning from a hospital in Albuquerque, he was in Carlsbad for a couple of weeks before going to Denver last month.
John C. Barberia is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lola Barberia; their son, Gary; parents, Mrs. and Mrs. J.B. Barberia, and five sisters, Mrs. O.C. Coffey, Mrs. O.G. Gastineau, Mrs. Dick Pinching, Mrs. E.M. Morris and Miss Lillie Barberia, all of Carlsbad.
