James E. Campbell was born 16 Dec 1839 in Randolph County to Isaac and Nancy Williams Campbell. He lived in Randolph County and worked as a blacksmith. Elisted 6 March 1862. Was a private, then corporal (before 28 May 1862). Was wounded at Gettysburg and kept in a Chester PA hospital and was then transferred to Point Lookout in Maryland (he arrived on the 4th of October in 1863). He was transferred
for prisoner exchange on the 6th of March in 1864.
Then he was returned to active duty (date not known). By September 1st in 1864 he had been promoted to Sergeant. He was disabled though and retired to the Invalid Corps on the 17th of November in 1864. He was paroled out of service on the 17th of May in 1865 in Greensboro, NC.

His wife was Martha E. Pugh and they were married on the 19th of October 1865. He died on the 3rd of June in 1907 and his grave is located at Cedar Falls Baptist Church --next to the graves of two of his infant children.
