Dee Cearley Cole, 95, a resident of Bayard, passed away Sunday morning. She was born Feb. 7, 1898, near Austin, Texas, the fourth of the 10 children of Sallie Ann Dennis Cearley and Clem Ervin Cearley. When she was 5 years old, the family left Texas by covered wagons to spend the next several years in Oklahoma and Indian territory. She married Robert Hugh Cole in 1927. They had three children, Sally Wofford of Bayard, Jean Pennington of Port Townsend, Wash., and Robert Cole Jr., who died in 1976 after a career of 23 years with the U.S. Navy. Mrs. Cole was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Bayard and of the Extension Club. She was a retired librarian. In addition to the surviving children, she leaves six grandchildren, Nancy Helton, Terry Hurt, Henry Pennington, Tom Pennington, Alvin Wofford and Joe Cole. She is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren, Richard, Staci and Georgia Helton, Jacob and Jill Hurt, Daniel, Cori, and Jason Wofford, Linda and Willie Pennington, and Jeffery, Allison, Robert, Gregory and Christopher Cole, and one great-great-grandson, Levi Helton. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hugh Cole, her son, Robert Cole Jr., her grandchildren, Doreen and Michael, a great-granddaughter, Christine, and a great-great-grandson, Jonathan. Services were held at the First Baptist Church in Bayard this morning at 10. Burial followed in Mountain View Cemetery in Lordsburg, where her husband and father are buried. Curtis-Bright Funeral Home of Silver City was in charge of arrangements.
