Son of Robert W. and Emily (Jackson) Godsey. After graduating from Winston County High School in 1921, he attended and graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute at Auburn AL and became a vocational agriculture teacher. He married Era Tidwell (17 June 1897 - 14 February 1986) in 1922. They had no children but through an endowment they built a children's home in Double Springs AL. He became active in Sacred Harp singing and in 1939, he led a group of singers that recorded Sacred Harp songs for a Library of Congress folklore project. He served as the mayor of Addison AL from 1952 to 1960. He and his wife wrote the words and music to the song "My Shepherd Guides" which was published in the 1960 Denson revision of The Original Sacred Harp songbook.
